How To Organize Your Car
May 11, 2011 • 1 Comment

I am not good at taking care of my car.  I do not wash it regularly and have been known for leaving my trunk in complete disarray.  Well, no one is perfect and even professional organizers have trouble areas.

Before

On Sunday, it was time to give my little Camry some TLC.  My friend Dawn, who is one of the most organized people I know (in all areas of her life) has inspired me.  Her car is always perfectly organized.  She has also put me to shame for not having proper supplies in place for various emergencies.  If you too have been neglecting your vehicle, then here are the steps to take to get your car in order.

1.  Remove garbage and anything that should not be in your car.  Take out car seats, if any, to prepare for the next step.

2.  Wash the car thoroughly and vacuum the floor.

3.  If you do not already have an emergency car and a first aid kits, consider acquiring them for those situations that many of us do not like thinking about.  Check out this list of recommended supplies.

4.  Invest in a couple of large containers to organize the contents of your trunk.  I purchased two baskets to keep my reusable shopping bags, some water bottles, sand toys, and other supplies in an orderly fashion.

5.  Use a smaller container inside the car to organize the miscellaneous, for which you otherwise do not have storage built in the vehicle.  I bought a small basket, in which I will keep a roll of paper towel, water, snacks for kids, wipes, etc.

6.  If your little ones spend a lot of time in the car, consider investing in a backseat car organizer like this, to keep things containerized:

7.  Have you taken your car for a maintenance visit lately?  If not, go have it done ASAP.  Use this project as an opportunity to really take care of your vehicle.  I also recommend using this time to calendar the next required car maintenance visit.

8.  Keep up the order now.  Do not use your car as storage.  Get in the habit of doing a weekly look through the car to remove any garbage and to declutter.
